Thunderwar- The Birth Of A Thunder [Self-released; 2013]

Thunderwar (formerly known as Perun) shows that death metal is still doing really well ! Their debut EP is amazing piece of music, probably one of the best releases of last year.
Polish quartet is playing epic death metal, placed somewhere between US and Swedish classics (being closer to the second one). From one hand band’s music is fast and aggressive, from the second hand we’ve got here a lot of amazing atmosphere (reminding me a bit of Unleashed. Actually it’s not the only association with that legendary band- Madness, Thunderwar’s singer sounds a lot like Johnny Hedlund). Strongest part of this EP are guitars- every single riff is a killer, every solo shreds. Everything is even stronger thanks to great drummer’s work, this guy surely knows what he’s doing- drum parts are (usually) fast and gives band perfect “engine”, but they’re not boring, really fits the rest of the instruments. Good job. Nice surprise here is also non-metal instrumental, entitled “The Birth Of a Thunder”. Last track on EP is a title track from the Perun’s only demo. The composition really fits the rest of album, although the sound is a bit different here. Because The Birth Of A Thunder sounds amazing ! Everything is recorded, mixed and mastered perfectly! Probably one of the best sounding new death metal albums.
So- to conclude: we’ve got here great epic death metal with a lot of classic inspirations. Last few months gave band opportunities to share stage with the top bands in history of death metal- and it’s good. Thunderwar deserves it. If they keep recording such a good material- we’ll have another death metal pride in our country.
