Morthus- The Abyss [Self-released;2014]

I’m always happy to hear such a young crew playing on a good level. Morthus is on stage for only two years right now, yet their first EP shows a really high level.
Band is playing blackened death metal. Long, complexed compositions goes along with really good sound. I think that highlight here is Pawel’s vocals. Deep, brutal growl. Instrumental layer is fast, brutal death metal, with a lot of nice, dark melodies (that kind of good ones, not all these modern half-pop riffs). Another powerful point here- guitar solos. Not too many of them- but they are amazing. Fast, shredding, more into a heavy than extreme metal way. There is no place of boredom on that album.
Although- we’ve got here one really big problem. Despite short, instrumental intro,”The Abyss” consists only of two songs. Alright, both of them are over 5 minutes long, but still- two songs? Even for EP it’s not enough. Band shows us goodly composed and well played material, so why so short? What’s the point of releasing such a small EP? What’s more surprising, even if it’s only two songs- everything is released in a really nice digipack with amazing graphics.  So let’s put everything this way- in musical case Morthus done really good job. But guys, if you’re reading that- make a longer material next time.
