When I received a packet from the city of Slupsk with a burnt CDR inside, containing the compilation of the WAROATH stuff, I surely didn’t know what to expect from this unknown band. So I played the cd, and noticed a title which looked strangely familiar, “Prisoners of Our Time.” Yes, these guys recorded a cover versionof one of the RUNNING WILD`s songs which, I won’t deny it, made me listen to their “Conjuration of the Wargods”.
I’ll tell you guys this stuff just crushed me, I am just impressed how easily they managed to do it. Well, I am an emotional guy, and I am always moved when I listen to old-school music like this one. There is no other way. What this “Conjuration of the Wargods” is all about, is just the very essence of the 80s metal – it is dirty, and it is devoid of any sterile production. It is music carrion suffused with the corpse`s odor. It reeks of Hell, plain and simple.
You can almost touch the breath of the Devil. The music is a dangerous mix of speed/black with plenty of NWOBHM influences. Simple, almost ascetic tracks are able to damage my head in an effective way. It is proven again that simplicity is power. This music is totally primitive, barbaric, yet sincere and super catchy. The lyrics are mostly written in Polish, and the vocals were taken care of by tireless Adrian; andthis guydoes an awesome job.
The music itself is a melting pot where you can find the darkest elements the bands such as KAT, HELLHAMMER, BATHORY and RUNNING WILD are known of. You need any better mix, hey? Well, what else can you expect from these old timers who`ve been glorifying old good metal for years?
The first to emerge from the abyss of Hades is “’Sprzysiężeniewojennychbogów”. I was amazed at this track right from its beginning. It has got a considerable dose of emotions, and its archaic sound of the guitar gives this song a classic character in a fucking awesome way. Most of this track is played in middle tempos, but the end is really, really fast. “Night of Devil’s Flags” is another cut sung in the language of Micinski. March-like rhymes mix with short outbursts of storming drums. It all burns like a Devilish ship in the guts of Styx.
You can smell tar and sulphur here. “Pagan Steel, Rivets and Leather (Total Metal - Piekielnychbogówmoc)” is another track glorifying Infernal Powers. Don’t expect any sophisticated lyrics here, no. Like the music itself, they`re simple and sincere. “Prisoners of our time” is, certainly, a RUNNING WILD cover song which, back then, was a truly satanic band. I am not surprised that these tracks were picked up by WAROATH, and I do think the RUNNING WILD`s first two albums are their best. WAROATH play these tracks in a fucking catchy, simple and very barbarian way.
The song that closes “Conjuration of the Wargods” stands out of the others due to its heavily accented guitar work. This track was also recorded at a higher volume level. The next two tracks were recorded for “Deathstrike from Hell” 7 ep 2015.It is still WAROATH all over – dirty metal suffused with Hell and Devil.
“On The Lunar Throne od Damnation” is a damn grim and EVIL cut that emanates with unspeakable hatred to all that is sacred; but still there is some room for melodic guitars, however these are not able to cover all this obnoxiousness. Like some Devilish dance of death this song rips souls off of dead corpses. This track is brutal too, and the lyrics sung in English fucking destroy everything.
“Wine of Abandoned Graveyard” reeks of putrefaction, too. It is a good live track to show the audience where they belong to! I am sure this track, when played live, totally devastates and kills all! These seven tracks turned my skull into Infernal Overkill. It`s been a long time since I have been devastated so much! That`s a Fucking Real Old School Metal!
