ATTOMICA INTERVIEW

So here we got it ! Legendary, amazing concert album recorded by reunited southern american thrash metal killing machine- ATTOMICA. The release idea for the album "Back and Alive" came after the show which was held in December 20, 2003 in Gym Orion which is located in the band`s hometown,Săo José dos Campos SP. That happened after 10 years of inactivity. The show titled "Attomica Reunion" had the participation of members who were part of the formation of the legendary album "Disturbing The Noise" 1991. The singer Fabio Moreira made his special participation in this show and did not follow with the band. The guitarist Joăo Marcio Francis also took over the lead vocals and with Andre Rod (bass) Mario Sanefuji (drums) e Joăo Paulo Francis (guitar) the band followed in quartet format until 2006, including having the opportunity  to share the stage with the American band  Exodus. The album was originally released in 2004 by the label Hellion Records in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Right now It's our pleasure to present it to you, connected with a lot of additional materials, like "Blast Of Video" release, interview with the band and some opinions of other brazilian musicians showing, how important Attomica is to their local metal scene. We're sure that you will enjoy that release!

Act I – Reunion & Back And Alive

1. Hello Andre. This yeah has passed 13years since Attomica came back to life. In this time a lot of things happened- both good and bad. What's your overall thoughts about this period?

A.Rod: Hi Leszek. Well, I'd say I saw all the good and bad times that occurred during these 30 years of band, starting with the continuous change of band members who surely damaged in a way the progressive course of the band's work. It has however contributed to create a difference between one work and another. The last 13 years weren't completely different but the changes have given different categories to the band' s work. Despite all trouble, I still think we have a positive balance.

2. After releasing "Disturbing The Noise" it seemed like you have "a wind into your sails". This material had a great reviews. You can think that after this album band finally had a good promotion. Despite that you were gone for 10 years. Why?

A.Rod: Yeah, the album "Disturbing The Noise" was a milestone in the band's history and it has been a reference until now. After the release we had good opportunities but no return. It wasn't a good time for metal in Brazil and we already had nearly 10 years of band and still hadn't achieved the expected results, so it  created a discouragement which resulted in disruption of work.

3. Luckily hunger for playing came back and you reunited in 2002. Tell me who was the main leader of reactivation?

A.Rod: I called the founding members for reactivating the band (2001), we rehearsed a few times but it wasn't possible to continue and the following year João Marcio Francis invited the "Disturbing the Noise" members to the meeting, which lasted until 2006. He was the main leader for getting together in 2002.

4. First official release after reunion is VHS "Blast Of Video", on which we can find a lit of archival stuff, for example videoclip for fenomenal "Deathraiser" from "Disturbing the noise". Can we read it as symbolical reference to time, when you suspended your
activity. By the way can you tell me more about realization of "Deathraiser" videoclip?

A.Rod: This video clip was produced specially for the tv program "Furia Metal" on MTV Brazil. The images were made in a theater in our hometown (Sao Jose dos Campos) and we created the script ourselves. At first it would have outdoor scenes but due to poor quality production the idea was discarted. The material was edited and completed in only two weeks.

5.Next to the mentioned clip on "Blast Of Video" there are two gigs from 1992 registered in Aeroanta and Arion. What are your memories about that gigs?

A.Rod: Aeroanta... Show with Kreator, the venue was crowded, a lot of energy... Very nice guys, it was great to be on the same stage with them here in Brazil! Arion... An event produced by ourselves, Igor Cavalera (Sepultura) came to our city to see our presentation. I also remember Fabio Moreira very angry with a fan during the show and this was one of the last great shows we did together in the 90s.

6. Great addition "Home Video" caught my attention. Can you please tell me more about that material compilation?

A.Rod: This was the first and unique compilation produced by Attomica so far. This much material was recorded by friends and re-edited by JM Francis (Atomica Studio). This "Home Video" shows various band’s phases from rehearsals and gigs in a period 1987 to 1990 approximately.

7 On previously mentioned release ATTOMICA changed logo for the first time. What was the caused that?

A.Rod: The purpose of the new logo was improving the reading and the removal of a ”T” was a study about numerology.

8 "Back And Alive" was recorded in the same line-up as "Disturbing The Noise" and everything seemed like you were supposed to continue playing together, but time brought a lot of personal changes. Are you satisfied with changes that happened in ATTOMICA ?

A.Rod: Not really, as I said before a change hinders the natural development process of any band, it slows down the work and new members must adapt. Sometimes changes are needed but besides that, all the musicians who have worked with us have contributed to our growth.

9 Two year long period of concert activity you finished with recording live album. I suppose that it's a kind of conclusion of one of band's career stages. I wonder why you didn't decide to record a studio album. Didn't you feel confident enough to record new album? Four new demo tracks you recorded in 2005, and new studio album in 2013. It's a long time. Does Fabio's departure from the band had a big matter here?

A.Rod: Fabio has always been a great friend and an amazing professional, we had a lot of fun in our trips with him but his absence wasn't the main reason for the gap the band was having. After 2007 we had a difficult time because of the continuous change of members and it had helped a lot to lose enthusiasm in our compositions.

10 "Back And Alive" was registered 20.12.2003 in Orion club in Sao Paulo. I suppose that there was a lot of emotions connected with that event...

A.Rod: Yes!!! There was a lot of emotion involved. First of all because the whole event was organized by ourselves, in every single detail, we had to work hard to get it right. Also, were part of the show the bands Morfolk and Mystic Atrocity, the last one had Pyda Rod (ex Attomica). The show was amazing and the public went wild.

11 Author of cover to the first Hellion records release is your ex-singer Fabio Moreira. Can you please tell me more about it? The idea seems great...

A.Rod: Fabio designed the covers to Limits of Insanity and Disturbing the Noise, in Back and Alive he worked digitally in a photograph. But the idea was really great.

12. Was it difficult for you to come back to playing? What did you do in that time? You were playing in AC/DC cover band, what about the rest of the guys?

A.Rod: It wasn't hard to me to go back because I haven't actually stopped, I've played in 3 cover bands during that time. In the AC/DC cover band I was the lead singer and the Francis brothers were guitarists. Some of the guys finished their studies and worked in their profession, others opened their own business. Fabio Moreira has a tattoo studio.

13. On "Back And Alive" there are no songs from "Limits Of Insanity". Is there any particular reason of it?

A.Rod: The songs of "Limits of Insanity" are performed in the late 80`s concerts when I
was the singer, when FabioMoreira took over there was a change in vocal style, not so appropriate to "Limits of Insanity" songs, these songs only returned to be part of our setlist when Alex Rangel joined the band.

14.From the time perspective I wonder what happened, that ATTOMICA despite such a powerful potential didn't achieve a commercial success like SEPULTURA. What's the cause of it in your opinion?

A.Rod: In my opinion wrong decisions. In September 1987 we had recorded and mixed our first album "Attomica 1" when by insistence of a member of the band, we broke the contract with the label "Enigma", from Sao Paulo which had already offered our job to labels abroad who were interested, I think that was the main reason.

ATTOMICA  Act II

1.So, let’s come to second part of the interview. What’s now? What are your plans for the future?

A.Rod: I have many plans, a new cd that is already being done, a new video clip, a commemorative show for 30 years and a tour through Europe. I hope to get almost everything done this year.

2.Right now you splitted into two bands. What was the cause of that conflict?

A.Rod: My commitment has always been very serious about Attomica,   I've always dedicated myself as much as I could, sparing no efforts to keep the group together so I think when a band member ceases to meet his obligations, missing shows and creating disunion between the group, he has to leave the band and let the band keep going. This person didn't accept my decision and hid the truth, creating unpleasant situations. Attomica is unique, always respecting the fans and meeting their needs, this farce didn't last long.

3.Do you think that it’s temporary, and in some time you’ll come back together in more classic line up?

A.Rod: I think it's unlikely to happen. Maybe a special presentation?!? I don't know.

4.You have a court fight now for a right to use the name Attomica. Who will win in your opinion? How are the things with it going?

A.Rod: This was another attempt to obstruct the path of Attomica. There is no court battle at   the moment, only one application for trademark registration that I am ahead of.  I think the name has to be with those who really want to move on with the band.

5.Does any Attomica plays gig right now, or both bands decided to “take a break” until this situation is over?

A.Rod: As I said before there is only one Attomica and we're moving on because we must to work and that's what we do best.

6.You released “Back And Alive/Blast Of Video” in Europe. Do you have some plans for European dates?

A.Rod: Certainly... Including Poland. Isn´t it ?

7....and what about summer festivals?

A.Rod: Of course!!! It would be amazing but we need more contacts to do that.

8.In what line-up you want to play right now?

A.Rod: There is only one line-up.

9.So, as it’s European release of album, please tell me more about your favourite bands from Europe, who put the most influence on you?

A.Rod: The first rock band that I heard was Led Zeppelin, it was in the early 70s, I also listened to Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden. Influence ... perhaps a bit of both.

10.And what about Polish bands? Which you like the most?

A.Rod: Vader and Behemoth ... They are very good bands.

11.How did Brasilian fans reacted to the news about Attomica having problems?

A.Rod: Certainly they were puzzled by the situation. I thank everyone who contacted me to clarify the facts, I can say I have great friends who know me for years and who support me because they know the true story.

12.What about new material? Do you have anything composed so far? “4” showed that Attomica is still strong and powerful name, do you think that after solving current issues you can give us another piece of music?

A.Rod: Yes, I already have some finished songs and I intend to be with the CD ready by the end of the year.

13.Thank you so much for the interview! Last word goes to you! Is there anything, you want to say to the readers?

A.Rod: I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to explain the incident and say that we are willing to work hard to keep Attomica's name among the great. Thanks  to all the fans ... news coming soon.

May 21st, 2015 Alex Rangel (R.I.P.) tragicly died in motorcycle accident. We're expressing our deepest pain and sending our condolences to the band. Redaction Oldschool Metal Maniac & Thrashing Madness
