TRANSGRESSOR - Ether For Scapegoat [Memento Mori; 2015]

How happy one gets when all these good, slightly forgotten albums from the past get re-released! A death metal band called Transgressor did, over their life span, record one albumonly. But what an album it is! Transgressor is heavy, sultry, obscure and brutal. What else does one need to be happy? The sound is devilishly filthy, the songs are complex and perhaps quite slow`ish – they, like a giant vice, slowly crushes your skull. This music is like a more somber version of Autopsy.

I`ll be frank with you guys. Ether for Scapegoat is not an easy album to comprehend. It is hard to get it through your head and one needs to stay focused in order to understand what this stuff is all about. Additionally, we have some untuned guitars here (untuned yes, yet untuned in a deliberate way) and this results in a chaotic and dissonant sound. Also, one ought to notice the rhythm section which speeds up when necessary, or hit you point-blank between your eyes at some other occasion. Vocals are damn diverse and that’s awesome too.

When we talk about stuff of this calibre, well, this stuff is among those forgotten and most interesting ones. Heavy, obscure and grim. Elaborated, genial and destroying everything. I am very happy this stuff made by these guys from Tokyo has seen the light of day again. Today, when we have more and more shitty albums infecting the scene, we ought to be reminded how this music of supreme quality should sound like. This album is totally cult – all ideas of death metal can be found here on this album.
