Compendium of Metal vol.6 [Metal on Metal Records; 2013]

Metal on Metal Records is keen on releasing compilation albums with its bands as Compendium of Metal, yes. What I am holding in my hands is the label`s sixth release telling us what this label is, in general, dealing with these days. Ok, let us start with heavy/power metal Attacker, a real classic bands in their genre. This band is in good shape, their sound is awesome, what a great introduction of this compilation album this band is. The next two tracks are delivered by Skelator, an American and heavy metal band, too. Well, to me, it is a bit too much in the Iron Maiden vein, especially the track titled "Guerreros De Metal". Their second track is a bit better, more thrashy, yet this stuff is much weaker than Attacker`s. The next band, Sacred Gate, is much nicer. Here, one can feel the old German heavy metal school. This band is for the worshippers of Grave Digger, as it is heavy and pretty much like this German band. Good, really good. The next are Maltese: Nomad Son, we`ve reviewed them before on different occasions. One of better bands as of recent years, when it comes to climatic doom metal. This is a must have for anyone into heavy and atmospheric music. Stonegriff from Sweden is dark and heavy too. These Swedes play heavily, atmospherically and nicely. After this band, we can listen to a real classic gem, and a solid kick in your filthy mug – Meliah Rage. Ok, I know their prime years are behind them, but they still can play decent music and do it in their own way. Sadly, this band is getting more and more forgotten; yet they still know how to do what they do. That`s the best track on this compilation, really. Another band here is Chilean Battlerage. Truly heavy metal music, supported by speed, a good vocal but a shitty, empty sound. Well, a band called Metal Law disappointed me. This is pretty much in the Manowar vein, with the drums sounding horrible. No catchiness, no originality; the only good thing here is a guitar solo. Outrage is more like old Celtic Frost. When it comes to their sound or song writing skills, it is a good band, no worries, only their vocal is kind of crappy. Mortalicum is just not my cup of tea – too much of everything, they try to blend heavy, doom and old hard rock into one. Don’t make any sense at all, yuk. But the next band is just awesome – Heretic! Ok, I know their best times were when Mike Howe was the band`s vocalist but still, this band is able to play excellent heavy/power. The way it should be, all right. Arkham Witch is another band which has been featured in Oldschool Metal Maniac. It is heavy/doom in the Sabbath vein. Nice, really. The last band to present is After Oblivion – death/thrash from Bosnia and Hercegovina. Good playing skills, a bunch of good ideas, alas, this stuff seems too complicated. Could`ve been utilized in a better way, this potential of theirs. Guys, change the vocalist, REALLY. All in all, it is another good compilation album to enjoy. Most of the bands are really decent. I am pretty sure most of readers would find something interesting. Wojciech Michalak
