CANCERFAUST – Killing Spree (2016) – CD Demo – Independent

This is the first stuff that these Polish young warriors present and they’ve done a good job in the “Killing Spree” demo, released last year. They bring us a very brutal death metal, without any trace of other subgenres, but only the purest death metal. Maybe because of this loyalty, they will surely please all the die-hard fans of the genre, but not exactly everyone in the underground scene, for they are not interested about bringing any innovation to the style. In spite of this, their honesty is perfectly notable and helps them to create a pretty convincing music, for sure!

They start the noise with “Art of murder”, whose beginning shows exactly what they came for: Cancerfaust enters with no mercy, dumping tons of heavy guitars, smashing blast-beating drums and ultra growling vocals, which is the basic formula that they follow up to the end of the demo. “Prophecy of tomorrow” has a very good riff and a comes with a more old-school death metal beat, i.e., slower drumming, with some doom-like parts, whose combination brings that typical death metal atmosphere made by top bands like Master, Immolation, Headhunter DC and others.

The same atmosphere is kept intact for the third song, “Feed us”, the best track from this demo. This song has a lot of different parts, showing their desire to evolve from the basic extreme metal formula to something with more tempo shifts and great guitar solos. By the way, Cancerfaust may not be the most original band, but their musicians are very skilled and know how to deliver good compositions that will surely be developed in their next releases. The fourth song is “Eradication complete”, another interesting track, with a great variation between fast and slow tempos and also a strong guitar work, followed by the last song, “Bleeding icon”, the longest track from this demo and the most complex in terms of structure.

Summing up, Cancerfaust is good death metal band, probably with a great future, since they know what they are doing. However, they still need to find their own way of expressing their art if they want stand out among the millions of bands we see nowadays in our underground scene. I know it’s not easy to build its own personality in a scene full of rules of behavior and composition – and sometimes, all the band wants is to make their music, without minding about doing something unique – but I’m sure that they will create their own path, because Cancerfaust shows a huge potential in this first demo.  Cristiano Passos
